The Past Simple
Tense describes things that happened in the past.
Students
The Pharaohs
ruled Egypt for thousands of years.
Marie died, at
the age of 86, in 1964.
We bought a
camera for Ann’s birthday this morning.
Note that we add
—ed for the regular verbs, but some of the verbs are irregular and
we use their irregular form instead. These forms must be learnt. You
can have a look at irregular verbs at the end of the book.

Charles Hardin
Holly came from Lubbock, Texas. He was born on 7 September 1936. He
made his first hit record in summer 1957. In February 1959 he died in
a plane crash. In that short time he had seven hit singles and made
two albums. But Holly wasn't just a singer. He was the first
singer/songwriter in pop music. He wrote 33 songs. He played with a
group called the Crickets. Their first hit record was 'That'll be the
Day'. In February 1958 the Crickets went to Australia and then to
Britain. In August 1958 Buddy Holly married Maria Elena Santiago.
Later that year, Holly moved to New York. On 2 February 1959 he gave
his last concert in Clear Lake, Iowa. That night, on 3 February, his
plane crashed.
