Действие произошло до какого-то действия в прошлом.

 

before + had + V3 – ed already by the time...

 

(+) They had eaten their pizza.

(?) Had they eaten their pizza?

            Yes, they had.                   No, they hadn`t.

(-) They hadn`t eaten their pizza.

 

First:	First: Then:
Должно быть в Past Perfect + had + V3 ed	She / pack / the suitcase → call / a taxi.
	Bob / eat / the meal → pay / the bill.
Then:	Mary / read / the contract → sign / it.
Должно быть в Past Simple + V2 ed	They / watch / the match → turn off / the TV.
was + were ...	Peter / borrow / some money → buy / a car.

+ had + V3ed → + V2ed
