Decide which answer (A,B,C or D) best fits each space.
SAY
ONE THING, MEAN ANOTHER
Do
you ever get annoyed by people who say one thing but meat another?
For example, they might say 'That's very kind of you, (1)
...C....., come,' when you (2).... them to the cinema, but really
all the time they are thinking of an (3)... …..so they can avoid
going out with you. People who ask for (4)............. can also
be irritating. They say things like 'What do you think I
(5)............ do?' but then they don't listen to what you tell
them. Others seem to have already made up their minds in any case,
because they don’t even wait for any advice and just answer
their own questions!
This really gets on my nerves, but it's not the only problem. When
people try to (6)........ some of them can be very annoying too.
For example, let's say that someone has
a / an
(7)... ….to make. They want you to open a door for them, and
they say'(8)...... but could you (9)...... open the door for me?'
I don't see why people can't be more direct. Why shouldn't they
just say '(10)................ open the door?' or something like
that? I've tried this a few times, but people either look annoyed,
or they don't do what I ask them to. I can't understand why!
